History of Jamia Millia Islamia

The history of Jamia Millia Islamia is linked to India’s freedom struggle and the educational awareness of Muslims. This institution was established in 1920 in Aligarh, which was part of the United Provinces (present-day Uttar Pradesh) of undivided India. At that time, the Khilafat Movement and Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement were in full swing in India. Rather, it would not be wrong to say that Jamia Millia Islamia was the result of the boycott of British-supported educational institutions. In this period of turmoil, the honest leaders of the country of that time realized that Muslims had lagged in education and social progress under the British colonial government, due to which it was considered necessary to establish an educational institution for them that could introduce them to modern education as well as Islamic values.

The founders of Jamia Millia Islamia included prominent leaders like Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari and Abdul Majeed Khwaja, who served the country not only in the political field but also in the educational front. Freedom fighter Maulana Mahmud Hasan laid the foundation of the first brick of Jamia Millia on Friday, 29 October 1920. Hakim Ajmal Khan was appointed the first Chancellor of Jamia while Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor. Under their leadership, Jamia took full part in the national movement against the British Empire and played an important role in national awakening. After the establishment of Jamia, its mission was clear which included providing high-quality education to Indian Muslims so that they can face the challenges of the modern world and contribute to national development.

At that time, Jamia Millia Islamia proved its importance not only in the educational but also in social and political fields. After the end of the Khilafat Movement and the failure of the Non-Cooperation Movement, Jamia faced financial crises. There came a time when it seemed that Jamia would not be able to survive. This was the historic moment when Gandhiji said that even if I had to beg for a bowl, I would take the bowl for Jamia. However, the sacrifices of the founders of Jamia and the support of Mahatma Gandhi saved the institution.

In 1925, Jamia Millia Islamia was shifted from Aligarh to Karol Bagh in Delhi to save it. This was the same year when great personalities like Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. Abid Hussain and Dr. Mohammad Majeeb joined Jamia in India, leaving behind their bright future and education abroad. After this, the new campus of Jamia started coming up in the Okhla area of ​​Delhi in 1936, where various departments of Jamia were shifted. Here, Jamia not only introduced educational reforms but also maintained its allegiance with the national movement.

Growth of Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia started its journey as a small institution but gradually emerged as a premier national university. In 1962, the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted Jamia the status of a “Deemed University”, and in 1988, the Indian Parliament elevated it to the status of a Central University through a special Act. This important milestone further strengthened Jamia’s academic reputation and enabled it to provide quality education to students from different parts of the country.

Today, Jamia Millia Islamia offers education from nursery to doctorate. With nine faculties and several research centres in place, it has become a full-fledged educational institution offering higher education programs in various fields including engineering, science, arts, social sciences, law, medical sciences, and business administration. Jamia’s curriculum takes into account modern education as well as Islamic values ​​and social responsibilities, thereby providing a holistic and comprehensive education to the students.

Jamia Millia Islamia has made remarkable progress in various fields of education and this institution always emphasizes social welfare and social justice. The mission with which the founders of Jamia laid the foundation of this institution is still a part of the curriculum and educational programs of Jamia. This institution has worked to combine education with social and moral training so that students can be strengthened not only in the educational field but also on the social and moral front.
After Jamia was given the status of a central university in 1988, its educational activities expanded further and the number of students increased significantly. The educational progress of Jamia has made it one of the leading educational institutions of India, and today this institution holds a special place not only in India but also globally due to its educational and research activities.

Achievements of Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia has excelled not only in the academic field but also in other important fields. Jamia’s role in the civil services examinations is especially commendable. Jamia established the “Residential Coaching Academy” (RCA) for the preparation of civil services examinations, which aims to provide quality coaching to students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women and minority classes. Every year hundreds of students are prepared for civil services examinations in this academy, and as a result, Jamia students are getting appointed to various government posts.
This is an important aspect of Jamia’s success, where apart from Muslim students, students from other backward classes are also provided with complete accommodation, education, and coaching free of cost. In this academy, Jamia has not only elevated the educational quality but has also taken a step towards social responsibility, which is an excellent example. Jamia’s achievements in the field of civil services have given it a unique place at the national level. Jamia has also excelled in academic and research work.
According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023, Jamia was ranked third in the “University” category, which is a testimony to its high educational standards. Apart from this, research on national and international issues is being done in various research centres in Jamia. The faculty and students of Jamia have participated in various national and international seminars and published research papers, which reflect its achievements in the field of research.

Another important aspect of Jamia Millia Islamia is that here students are given social and moral training along with academic activities so that they succeed not only in the field of knowledge but also in social responsibilities. The educational system of Jamia helps to make students complete citizens, who can play an important role not only in their education but also in social welfare.

Jamia Millia Islamia has travelled a great journey full of ups and downs since its inception. This has made it an important educational institution and as a result, Jamia is moving on the path of continuous development. This institute has made a distinct identity not only in India but also globally. The hard work and dedication of the students and teachers of Jamia have made it one of the best educational institutes in the country.

Jamia’s achievements in the civil services examinations and its ranking at the national level are proof of its educational quality. The future of Jamia also seems bright, and this institute will continue to provide high-quality education to the coming generations and contribute to the progress of India. On the occasion of the 104th Foundation Day of Jamia, while paying tribute to the founders of Jamia, we pray to Allah that Jamia continues to progress by leaps and bounds.
